Barter Books Guide
Barter Books: A Book Lover's Paradise in a Historic Train Station Guide
Welcome to Barter Books, one of the largest second-hand bookstores in Britain, housed in a magnificent Victorian railway station in Alnwick. More than just a bookstore, it's an experience, a place where the love of reading and history intertwine. Imagine browsing through towering shelves filled with countless titles, the aroma of old paper filling the air, all within the grandeur of a beautifully restored train station. The building itself has a rich history. Originally opened in 1887 as Alnwick Station, it served as a vital link for the town, connecting it to the wider railway network. After its closure in 1968, the station fell into disrepair until it was rescued and transformed into Barter Books in 1991. The owners, Stuart and Mary Manley, have meticulously preserved the station's original features, including the waiting rooms, platforms, and even the station's original fireplaces, creating a truly unique and atmospheric setting. It's also famous for being the accidental birthplace of the "Keep Calm and Carry On" poster, which was rediscovered here in 2000. Beyond browsing the vast collection of books, visitors can relax in the cozy reading rooms, enjoy a cup of tea or coffee in the station buffet, and even warm themselves by the crackling fire. Children will be delighted by the model railway that runs overhead. Barter Books also operates a unique barter system, allowing you to exchange your unwanted books for credit towards new purchases. It's a perfect place to spend a rainy afternoon, discover a hidden literary gem, and soak in the unique atmosphere of this beloved Alnwick landmark.
